A Little Writing Update-Where I’ve Been and Where I’m Going

I’m not entirely sure when I last talked to you guys about writing. Either way, much of my plans have changed. I’ve changed book ideas, book types, book titles until I’ve found the one I truly want to write.

I spent April Camp NaNoWriMo outlining and structuring a brand new novel. I’ve never been a hard core outliner. My first novel just kind of…happened. My second had a very loose outline, just chapter by chapter. Even my outline/structure for the new novel wasn’t as in depth as some of the ones I’ve seen.

For July camp, I wanted to write the novel. Spoiler alert: I didn’t. I wrote about a third of it. And then, once again, everything changed. I reread my first real novel and decided it had potential to be completely rewritten. I spent some time adding in scenes, taking away scenes, and getting to know my characters better.

For NaNoWriMo, I was going to write it. And….I didn’t. I couldn’t. My little NaNo novel (With a brand new title), only had 3,000 words. I couldn’t write it. Maybe I wasn’t in the habit, or maybe I didn’t truly want to. I don’t know.

I reread what I had from July Camp and I was pleasantly surprised. It was certainly the best thing I’ve written thus far. So, I made my decision to not let the hours spent outlining and structuring go to waste. I was going to write that novel, but in a new form. For those of you who have been reading my blog for while, I call it Catch. It has a new title now, but I’ll continue to refer to it by that name.

And that, dear readers, is where I am today. I have a few pages written of it and plan on finishing it by March. Hopefully.

Here’s a little look at my writing plan for the rest of the year.

Finish Catch in its new form.

Revise and edit Catch. Since I plan on publishing it, I want it to be nice and neat.

It’s Camp NaNoWriMo. Honestly, I’m not sure if I’m going to do this Camp. I’ll probably either spend this month doing more edits and asking some people to read it for me (betas). Or, I might enlist some betas and write another novel.

Probably more edits to Catch.

That’s as far as I’m planning for now. I don’t know where my writing’s going to take me this year, but I know I want to get serious about it.

Thanks for reading this little update! I know I’ve said it before, but I am working on creating a schedule for the rest of the year.

How’s your writing coming along?

  1. Ooh, Catch sounds cool. I want to know what it’s about(I’ve been reading your blog for a while, but I somehow have no recollection of this novel idea) Anyway, it seems like you have some good plans. Last year I remember you had very big goals(I want to say three novels?) and I thought you were being a bit ambitious. I think that these goals seem realistic. My writing? Uh, I guess just more short stories? I’m hoping to come up with plenty more ideas for my characters.
